Christy Ucheibe: Benfica’s midfield ‘General’ fueling Super Falcons’ 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup dream

When Christy Onyenaturuchi Ucheibe burst onto the scene in Nigeria’s U17 Women’s national team during the qualifying stage of the 2016 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, it was evident that she possessed exceptional talent.

In a team boasting names like Rasheedat Ajibade and Chidinma Okeke, Ucheibe’s relentless work in the midfield set her apart.

Her journey to the top was not without its share of setbacks.

Missing out on the 2014 World Cup due to her age, Ucheibe was determined to seize her opportunity at the 2016 edition.

However, the Flamingoes’ campaign in Jordan did not go as planned, leaving them at the bottom of their group and crashing out of the tournament.

Undeterred, Ucheibe picked herself up and continued to prove her worth.

Her quality caught the attention of the U20 women’s national team handlers, leading to her inclusion in the squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria’s Falconets dominated the qualifiers, and Ucheibe shone in midfield as they secured their place in the 2018 U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

Although the team performed admirably at the tournament, finishing second in their group, they fell short in the quarterfinals stage against Spain.

After that disappointment, the Capital City Dove FC product spent a year in Lafia with Nasarawa Amazons. It was with the Amazons that Ucheibe’s talent caught the eyes of scouts abroad, and she moved to Sweden to join Assi IF.

Ucheibe’s standout performances in Sweden attracted the attention of Portuguese giants Benfica, and in February 2020, she signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the top-tier club.

Her impact was immediate, as she helped Benfica secure the Taça da Liga title within weeks of her arrival. From there, her influence on the team only grew stronger.

In her first full season with Benfica, Ucheibe played an instrumental role in clinching the league and cup double.

The following season, she added two more titles to her collection: the league title and the Super Cup.

The recently-concluded 2022/2023 campaign saw her lead Benfica to another impressive league and cup double, cementing her reputation as a midfield force to be reckoned with.

Recognition for her outstanding performances came last year when Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum invited her to join the national team for the 2022 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Her debut against Cameroon was a hard-fought match, with Nigeria winning by a lone goal to qualify for the World Cup.

Ucheibe has made ten appearances for the Super Falcons, scoring once.

Yet, it is her standout performance against Canada at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup that truly showcased her abilities.

Alongside the N’golo Kante-like Deborah Abiodun in midfield, Ucheibe was a force to be reckoned with, both defensively and offensively.

She completed 50% of her dribbles, won numerous duels, made key interceptions, and contributed to attacking plays with pinpoint passing.

Popular rating platform, Sofascore, gave Ucheibe a remarkable individual rating of 7.5, second only to the penalty-saving heroics of Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Her efforts helped Nigeria secure an impressive draw against the reigning Olympic champions, Canada.

As Nigeria prepare to face Australia in their next match, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Ucheibe once again.

If she can replicate her disciplined and effective display, along with the support of her international teammates, the Super Falcons have a real chance to cause an upset and secure a historic victory over the co-hosts.

With her undeniable talent and tireless work ethic, Ucheibe is undoubtedly one of Nigeria’s most crucial assets in their quest for glory at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Her performances for Benfica and the Super Falcons make her a player to watch and a key figure in shaping Nigeria’s footballing future.
