The 2013 continental champions took their pound of flesh off the Djurtus to claw their way back to prominence in the qualifying campaign

The Super Eagles have returned home after a hard-fought victory against Guinea-Bissau in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

The Eagles were able to reclaim the top spot in Group A after avenging their loss to the Bissau-Guineas last Friday. The team arrived back in the country in the early hours of Tuesday via a chartered flight.

Napoli striker was among the first to exit the aircraft, followed by others, including Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman and Leganes defender Kenneth Omeruo.

The Eagles had lost their first leg to the Wild Dogs in Abuja, which put them in a tough spot in the qualifying campaign.

However, on matchday four in the windy city of Bissau, the three-time African champions secured a 1-0 victory with a goal from Moses Simon, who scored from the penalty spot. This win allowed the Super Eagles to overtake the Wild Dogs and reclaim the top spot in Group A.

The players are now expected to return to their respective clubs as the international break ends, and league football resumes in Europe.

However, they will be back in action for the next round of the AFCON qualifiers in June, when they travel to Sierra Leone. The Super Eagles had won the first leg against Sierra Leone 2-1 at the Abuja National Stadium, thanks to goals from Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen.

The Eagles will round up their AFCON qualifying campaign with a home game against Sao Tome and Principe. The same team that they had thrashed 10-0 in June.

A win in either of these games will be enough to send Nigeria to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
