‘One of the best African coaches’– Okocha tips ex-Al Ahly manager for Peseiro’s job

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are drawn into a group with Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau for the AFCON, set to commence their group stage matches in January

Super Eagles icon Austin Jay Jay Okocha has suggested a coach like former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Pitso Mosimane as a potential candidate for the Super Eagles role, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria, champions in 2013, find themselves in Group A for the delayed 2023 AFCON alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.

With the upcoming tournament, the Super Eagles aim to overcome their previous round of 16 exit from the last edition held in Cameroon.

However, the team faced difficulties in their recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers, securing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, putting their World Cup participation at risk for the second consecutive time. This has sparked an outcry among fans, with calls for Peseiro’s dismissal.

In a statement during an event celebrating 60 years of the Bundesliga in Johannesburg, Okocha proposed the idea of a coach like former Al-Ahly manager Mosimane taking over if Peseiro departs.

“Without any doubt, Pitso is one of the best African coaches, and his track record is there for everybody to see,

“If we can get a coach like that, he will add great value to our football because he’s got a lot of experience in Africa. I don’t know how true are the links between him and the Nigerian national team, but a coach like that will be most welcome for us.” Okocha said, as quoted by TimesLive.

While reports indicate Mosimane’s potential move to a European team, previous reports from Soccernet Nigeria suggested his interest in the Super Eagles role without reconsideration.
