Many Killed, Others Injured As Bandits Invade Another Sokoto Market
The insecurity in the North West region of the country took a new twist on Sunday as bandits invaded the Goronyo market in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The bandits stormed the weekly market, shooting sporadically and killing several persons in the process. It was gathered that some traders and buyers were killed, while many others were injured during the attack.
According to Daily Trust, the bandits operated for several hours unhindered by security agencies or vigilantes.
Ezenwoko’s Blog learned that this is the third time in two weeks bandits have attacked a village market in the state after 20 persons were earlier killed at Ungwan Lalle market.
However, this might be connected to the report that bandits terrorising Zamfara State and its environs are now in serious starvation.
The State deputy chairman of the committee on finding a lasting solution to insurgency in the state, Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, made the submission in a statement on Monday.
Shinkafi related the bandit’s lack of food to the decisive security measure implemented by the state government in its bid to end banditry and other criminal activities in the state.
He explained further that the bandits now have no other option than to release their victims after a moment as they wouldn’t be able to feed them.
Shinkafi said captives are now been released freely without paying a dime as nobody was willing to pay, adding that security agencies in the state have been tackling the bandits.
He said: “The notorious bandits are gradually shifting from the state due to hunger and starvation. You can see that since the state government implemented the stiffer security measures, banditry activities have reduced drastically.”
