FIFA Women’s World Cup: Coach Waldrum expresses disappointment after Ireland draw

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, expressed his disappointment in his team’s inability to win the game against Ireland on Monday.

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, has made it clear that he was disappointed in his team’s inability to secure three points over the Republic of Ireland, Soccernet.ng reports.

The game ended in a goalless draw, but the girls had chances to put the game to bed between ninety minutes but failed to take their chances, and that meant Nigeria stayed second in the final standings of Group B. Nigeria started the game on the front foot, looking to build on the win against Australia, and with Oshoala back with the goals, the Super Falcons needed to avoid defeat to secure qualification.

The draw means The Super Falcons will find out their eventual round of sixteen opponents on Tuesday, but with suggestions that Coach Waldrum’s side will be facing England, the coach has maintained faith in his side. Speaking in his post-match presser, the coach said;

“We could have won the match and so it almost seems disappointing that we didn’t get the three points.”

When quizzed about the possibility of his team playing against England in the next round, he said;

“Well, I think they’re going to be another team. If it’s England it’s the European champions; We’ve already played the Olympic gold medal winners, we’ve already beat the host team. So, it’s just going to be another one of those matches that we’ve been playing in.”

The Super Eagles survived Group B with a win against Australia and draws against Canada and The Republic of Ireland, and the coach has made it clear that he’s confident in his team’s ability to take on any opponent, stating how proud he is of his team.

“I don’t think anybody before we got here, believed that we could get out of this group and go through it without losing a match, so I’m so proud of them and the effort they put in and so happy for them that they’re getting to experience this.”
