Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta eyeing 2021 Super Eagles invitee as Bukayo Saka’s ideal backup

The Gunners have some of the most exciting young attackers in the Premier League, but their Spanish manager wants some more

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly interested in signing Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise as a backup to Bukayo Saka, Soccernet.ng reports.

Olise, 21, has emerged as one of the most promising youngsters in the Premier League, with eight assists and two goals in 29 league appearances this season.

According to Football Transfers, Arteta believes that Olise is a perfect fit for Arsenal in terms of age, likely cost, and resale potential. The Gunners manager has emphasized the importance of signing Premier League-proven players, and Olise’s track record with Palace could make him a solid option for the North London club.

The 2021 Super Eagles invitee is primarily an outside forward or winger on the right side of the pitch, but he has also played as an attacking central midfielder. Arteta sees him as an ideal backup to Saka, who has been one of Arsenal’s standout performers this season.

Crystal Palace is said to be looking for at least £40 million for Olise, who still has three years left on his contract. However, if Arsenal presents the right offer, and if there is pressure from the player to leave, the London club could be persuaded to sell.

Olise is also reportedly an Arsenal fan, which could work in the Gunners’ favour in negotiations. It is unclear whether there is a release clause in his contract.

Arsenal have shown this year with the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk that they will not be extorted in transfer negotiations, so the cost of the deal could be a determining factor. If Palace is relegated this season, their asking price for Olise could be reduced to around £35 million.

Palace has recently appointed Roy Hodgson as caretaker manager, and with a two-game winning streak, it seems unlikely that they will be relegated. However, if Arsenal decides to pursue Olise, it could make for an interesting transfer saga this summer.
