Why I snubbed Nigeria for Germany-Jamal Musiala opens up
Musiala was eligible to play for three nations but he chose Die Mannschaft
Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala has revealed that he snubbed Nigeria to play for the German national team because he feels more comfortable there.
Musiala was one of the hottest prospects in football when he shot into the limelight in 2020. His pace, technicality, strength, and finishing were important aspects of his game.
Despite the array of stars at Bayern Munich, the youngster was still getting a lot of minutes.
On the international stage, Musiala had the difficult task of choosing which country to represent because he was eligible to play for three.
The 19-year-old forward was born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother. He played for England at youth level before switching to Germany in 2021.
It was a tug of war between England, Germany, and Nigeria as even former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr admitted that he tried to get Musiala to don the green and white.
However, the Bayern Munich star chose Die Mannschaft over Nigeria and has since established himself in the German squad. He was at the last Euros and he featured prominently for them at the previous World Cup.
Speaking on his reason for representing Germany, Musiala has revealed that he pledged his allegiance to Germany because feels more comfortable there.
“I could have played for Nigeria because it crossed my mind, and I thought about it well. I had good talks with Nigeria and Germany,” Musiala said per TeamNigeriaUK3.
“So it really just came down to me and where I’d feel the most comfortable. So I decided to go with Germany.
Musiala’s decision to play for Germany has paid off, as he has made 20 appearances for Die Mannschaft. Also, at club level, he has excelled. He has played his way into becoming a regular at Bayern Munich.
With the paucity of quality attacking midfielders in the Super Eagles, Musiala could just have been the answer.
