Weah is like Finidi – US coach compares Juventus target with former Ajax wing-wizard

Gregg Berhalter, head coach of the US national team, has drawn an intriguing comparison between promising American forward Timothy Weah and former Super Eagles winger George Finidi, Soccernet.ng reports.

Weah, who hails from a footballing dynasty as the son of Liberia’s President George Weah, has been making waves with his performances for Lille and is now on the verge of joining Juventus.

While some have likened Weah’s style of play to that of Colombian international Cuadrado, Coach Berhalter believes he more closely resembles former Ajax sensation, George Finidi.

Expressing his perspective on the matter, Berhalter stated, “Weah in place of Cuadrado? They do resemble each other a bit, but not that much. If I have to compare Timothy to a more experienced player, well, then I would say Finidi.

“Remember the winger/outside forward of Van Gaal’s Ajax that won the Champions League in the 1990s? That’s how Weah is: dynamic, fast, and with excellent skills.”

Berhalter went on to envision Weah’s ideal position, saying, “I see him best on the right flank; he can play a bit higher up or a bit deeper. But also as a striker or on the left wing.

“Versatility is one of his strengths, as well as his ease in delivering crosses. Weah is a dangerous winger. And he’s also a nice and serious guy. Just like his father, George, a true football star, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person.”

George Finidi, once lauded as one of the finest wingers in the world, etched his name into football history during his time with Ajax in the 1990s.

He was a pivotal figure in the team’s remarkable achievements, encompassing three Eredivisie titles, the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and, most notably, the UEFA Champions League triumph of 1995.

Moreover, Finidi proudly hoisted the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations trophy as part of the Nigerian national team.

Since retiring from professional football, he has embarked on a coaching career and recently guided Enyimba International FC to their record-breaking ninth league title.
