“We use that to our advantage” – Zimbabwe’s Munetsi reveals secret weapon to beat Super Eagles in 2026 WCQ clash
The Warriors will test their might against the Super Eagles in Rwanda as both teams aim for their first win during the qualifiers
In the lead-up to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash against Nigeria, Stade de Reims midfielder Marshall Munetsi has expressed Zimbabwe’s determination to secure a victory when they face the Super Eagles on Sunday at Huye Stadium, Butare.
Despite being labeled underdogs against Baltemar Brito’s squad, Munetsi exudes confidence in Zimbabwe’s ability to upset their formidable opponents.
Zimbabwe were held to a goalless stalemate against Rwanda on Wednesday and watched as Nigeria wobbled to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Lesotho.
Highlighting a potential advantage, Munetsi noted that Nigeria, having played 24 hours after the Warriors, will enjoy limited recovery time. He believes this could play in Zimbabwe’s favour.
In a statement to the Herald, Munetsi acknowledged the upcoming challenge, stating,
“It’s going to be a good challenge against Nigeria, and I’m sure it will be a game of fine margins.
“They played on Thursday and didn’t have much time to recover, so we can use that to our advantage.”
Despite the absence of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Nigeria will be able to field Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface, Leicester City ace Kelechi Iheanacho, OGC Nice star Terem Moffi, and Real Sociedad hitman Umar Sadiq.
Acknowledging the star-studded lineup of the Super Eagles, Munetsi emphasised the importance of strategic planning, saying,
“Obviously, the team has big-name players, but even then, if they don’t have time to recover and all the travels, it might be difficult for them to adjust.
“We just need to be confident and have a good game plan for us to get maximum points.”
Nigeria have won four and drawn two of their last six games against Zimbabwe.
