Watford’s Premier League best: Dennis guns for Deeney, Ighalo’s record
The Nigerian attacker could write his name in gold in the club’s history books less than twelve months after joining from Belgium
Super Eagles forward Emmanuel Dennis has had an excellent season in the Premier League for Watford.
The Hornets’ have struggled without end on their return to the top division, losing an astonishing 22 of the 32 games, winning just six, and are prime candidates to drop back to the Championship.
Still, Dennis has impressed in only his maiden campaign in England and already has in his sight one Watford record held by the club’s legendary striker, Troy Deeney.
Dennis has managed a combined total of 15 goal contributions (10 goals, five assists), a tally which puts him in third place in Watford’s best-ever goal return in the Premier League.
Troy Deeney’s 20-goal contribution (13 goals, seven assists) and Odion Ighalo’s 18-goal contribution (15 goals, three assists) from the 2015-16 season are the club’s best Premier League returns.
Watford escaped relegation that year, finishing 13th with 45 points after scoring 40 league goals.
That season ended very differently from the current campaign, though, with Dennis the only Watford player who has hit double-digit goals. The trio of Ismaila Sarr, Josh King, and Juan Hernandez netted just five each to make the Golden Boys one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league.
Watford have six matches to save their season, starting with Saturday’s crunch clash at Manchester City.
And Dennis will likely be at the centre of any miracle the Hornets pull off to retain their top-flight status. And in so doing, the former Club Brugge forward could become the club’s most productive player ever in the Premier League.
