Watch: Yakubu Aiyegbeni applauds Doucouré’s stunner that kept Everton in the Premier League
Thanks to a fantastic goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure, Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s former team, Everton, avoided dropping to the second division
Super Eagles legend, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, was spotted reacting to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s spectacular goal that kept Everton in the English Premier League, Soccernet.ng reports.
Sean Dyche’s men, as they were being tailed by Leicester City, needed a victory against A.F.C Bournemouth to safeguard their stay in the top flight, and thanks to a 57th-minute strike from the Frenchman, they got it.
Aiyegbeni made 107 appearances for the Blues, scoring a total of 33 goals and providing 12 assists during his stint with the Goodison Park team.
On the last day of the 2007–2008 campaign, he scored twice against Newcastle United in a 3–1 victory at Goodison Park to help the Toffees achieve fifth place and a spot in the 2008–09 UEFA Cup tournament.
Everton who before their last home game sat atop the relegation zone of the Premier League ended their season with 36 points which was enough to stay in the top flight.
Goalkeeper Mark Travers, filling in for captain Neto, who was unable to play due to private reasons, had to make two excellent stops in the first half.
But after being under so much pressure from the Merseyside squad, Doucoure ultimately gave Everton the lead with a first-time volley from the outside of the box.
Aiyegbeni, who was seen cheering for his previous team while behind his TV, expressed his happiness.
“Get there boy” he said, reacting to Doucoure’s goal. “Power, Yes! Yes!! Yes!! Boom!” he added.
