‘Wasn’t enough’- Boniface reacts as Union SG loses Jupiler Pro League to Antwerp
Union SG’s defeat to Club Brugge and Antwerp’s tie with KRC Genk handed the Great Old the Belgian Pro League title
Nigerian attacker, Victor Boniface, expressed disappointment as Royale Union Saint Gillioise lost the Belgian Pro League title to Royal Antwerp FC, Soccernet.ng reports.
Toby Alderweirreld’s late-minute goal in a 2-2 tie against KRC Genk sealed the league title for the Antwerp-based club. On the opposite side of the nation, Union SG fell 3-1 against Club Brugge to equal for second place in the playoff group with 46 points.
Following this, the 22-year-old attacker resorted to social media to express his displeasure at the defeat while also praising his team’s outstanding performance in the 2022-23 season.
The Brussels-based club battled their way to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals and were on the brink of winning the Jupiler Pro League, which would top off an outstanding season.
But following the setback, Boniface delivers an emotional message to Union SG supporters through his social media channel.
“Hard feeling to write, still very sad about the defeat but proud of the delivery of the whole team and fans. Unfortunately, our best wasn’t enough, but the learning remains to evolve. Pray and thank God regardless of the circumstances.” he wrote.
With his amazing performance for the Belgian team, the Nigerian star concluded the Europa League as the top scorer with 6 goals, and it might be his last game for the club as he is linked with a transfer to elite clubs in Europe.
