UEFA Champions League: Chukwueze upbeat on Villarreal’s chances against Liverpool
The Super Eagles winger grabbed Villarreal’s equaliser and the suckerpunch against Bayern Munich
Samuel Chukwueze hit another landmark in his Villarreal career when he scored a vital 88th minute leveler that sent Bayern Munich out of the Champions League.
That goal has gotten many talking about the Yellow Submarine ahead of their semifinal clash against Liverpool.
It’s Villarreal’s first semifinal appearance since the 2005/06 season, coincidentally against an English opponent, Arsenal.
Villarreal were unlucky to have been knocked out by Arsenal that season as they missed a late penalty, taken by former Argentine international, Juan Roman Riquelme.
Chukwueze is a part of a generation looking to make history more than a decade since that day in 2006, and is hoping they can go one step further. His goal has brought them this far and he’s not giving up on their chances yet.
The Nigerian winger believes Villarreal have a chance to cause an upset in spite of the many expectations veering towards a Liverpool triumph.
“We know all about Liverpool and they are expected to win, so the pressure is on them,” Chukwueze told BBC Sport Africa.
“We have a squad and manager good enough to compete against any team in the world. Because of the way Liverpool play some people have already made their own predictions but that is normal in football.
“We have a job to do and we are not going to Liverpool to lose. Why not aim for the best result over there? And that is what we hope to do.”
