Snubbed Super Eagles forward is the highest scoring Nigerian in Europe’s major leagues
The Super Eagles forward was snubbed by national team handlers for the friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador but is the highest scoring Nigerian in Europe’s five major leagues
Taiwo Awoniyi was in his best mood on Saturday as he bagged a brace to increase his season’s league tally to 15.
The former Liverpool attacker was tied on 13 goals with Victor Osimhen before facing VFL Bochum on Saturday. Both forwards were the highest scoring Nigerian attackers in Europe’s major leagues.
Awoniyi’s brace, however took him ahead of any other Nigerian in Europe’s major leagues, in what has made the decision to ignore him for the Super Eagles, a ridiculous one.
His brace was also enough to power Union Berlin to the Europa League next season as his agent has confirmed to Soccernet that the Premier League is an option for Awoniyi.
The just-concluded Bundesliga season is the first full season enjoyed by Awoniyi and he has shown he could be relied upon when he has the team backing him.
Only Osimhen may equal or beat Awoniyi’s scoring return this season, of any Nigerian player in Europe’s best leagues.
Awoniyi was snubbed in a 30-man Super Eagles squad to face Ecuador and Mexico in the United States. Nine forwards were invited for the friendlies.
