Scavenger arraigned for stealing Oyo govt cables


A 46-year-old scavenger, Samson Kadiri, was on Monday arraigned in an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan for allegedly stealing electric wire cables belonging to the Oyo State Government.

The police charged Kadiri with two counts of wilful damage and theft.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecution counsel, Insp Olalekan Adegbite, told the court that Samson on Feb. 13, at about 7am, damaged Oyo State Government property.

Adegbite said the defendant allegedly cut and stole cable wires used in the electrification of Awotan refuse dump site at Apete, Ibadan worth N100,000.

He said the offence contravened Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs P.O. Adetuyibi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until May 17 for hearing.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that if found guilty, Kadiri is liable to three to seven years imprisonment.
