“Really disappointing” – Ex-Ajax star knocks Super Eagles after FIFA ranking slip
The three-time African champions suffered a shock defeat to Guinea-Bissau last month, and it has reflected on the standing with the world governing body
Former Nigeria international Tijani Babangida has expressed his disappointment at the Super Eagles' drop in the latest FIFA ranking.
The former Ajax winger spoke to DAILY POST about his concerns regarding the team's recent performances.
The Super Eagles have dropped five places to 40th in the latest FIFA ranking, released on Thursday. The team also dropped to sixth position in Africa following their shocking 1-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau last month.
Babangida believes that the team's drop in ranking resulted from their recent performances, especially their defeat to Guinea-Bissau. He expressed his disappointment at the team's inability to maintain their position in the ranking.
“It's really disappointing to see the Super Eagles go down in the ranking. It was as a result of the defeat to Guinea-Bissau and recent results,” Babangida said.
Despite his disappointment, Babangida is confident that the Super Eagles will bounce back from this setback. He believes that the team will fight back and improve their ranking.
“I strongly believe that the Super Eagles will bounce back from this setback. The team will fight back; I'm sure of that. We look forward to the next qualifiers, and I'm sure they will win the games against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe,” he said.
The Super Eagles will look to improve their ranking when they face Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe in the next round of qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
A win in any of those two games will see Nigeria qualify for the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Ivory Coast next year.
