Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Ajomale Hints On Tinubu’s Running Mate

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Ajomale Hints On Tinubu's Running Mate

The immediate past chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Henry Ajomale, has spoken on the Muslim-Muslim ticket controversy that has surrounded the choice of vice president slot in the party.

Ajomale stated that the debate over the Muslim-Muslim ticket is a distraction to the ruling party, stating that the conversation should be about competence and merit.

Ezenwoko's Blog reports that there have been different reactions to the speculation that the ruling APC may field a Muslim as the running mate of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, in the 2023 presidential election.

Some APC chieftains in their reactions have asked Nigerians to ignore the religion of the party's presidential candidate and his running mate but focus on their competence, while many people and groups such as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Catholic Church have rejected the plan by the political parties to field a Muslim/Muslim ticket in the 2023 presidential election.

In an interview with The Punch, Ajomale advised those debating over the Muslim-Muslim ticket to redirect their energies into picking a competent candidate to complement Tinubu's presidency.

He asserted that the religion of a presidential candidate does not matter so far as the person can deliver the dividends of democracy to the citizens.

He said, “If you ask me, I don't think Atiku can pull this country out of its present mess. To put food on someone's table doesn't require you to be a Christian or Muslim. I am a Christian myself. The major problem really is who will give Asiwaju the votes. We have no problem with his competence because we know he can deliver and do what he promised the electorate.”

Speaking further, Ajomale disclosed that Tinubu's running mate would be announced on Thursday night in order to meet the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of presidential candidates and their running mates.

“By Thursday night, the party will announce the VP candidate because we have to deliver the name to INEC by Friday,” he said.
