Manchester United legend confirms he will no longer work with Super Eagles star: “I’m finished”
The Nigerian international joined the Dutch giants last summer, but things have not gone as well as he would have expected
Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has announced his departure from Ajax after serving as the club’s director for nearly eleven years, Soccernet.ng reports.
The renowned former goalkeeper, who played a key role in the acquisition of Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey from Glasgow Rangers last season, cited the overwhelming criticism he faced as the reason for his decision.
Bassey’s arrival at Ajax was met with high expectations following his impressive performances in the Europa League, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament.
However, the transfer failed to yield the desired results, as Bassey faced significant scrutiny and was eventually dropped from the starting lineup. Ajax, too, endured a disappointing season, finishing third in the Eredivisie standings.
Expressing his sentiments on the club’s official website, van der Sar said, “After almost eleven years in management, I am finished. We’ve experienced both wonderful moments and incredibly challenging periods.
“I am immensely grateful for the people I have worked with and our accomplishments at Ajax. However, I feel the need to distance myself, unwind, and pursue other endeavors.”
Pier Eringa, chairman of Ajax’s Supervisory Board, expressed regret over van der Sar’s decision, acknowledging the club’s numerous successes and international acclaim under his leadership.
Eringa further revealed that the current management would assume van der Sar’s responsibilities until a new management composition is announced after August 1st.
Although van der Sar’s contract was initially set to expire in mid-2025, he has chosen to depart immediately. Nevertheless, he will remain available for consultation and advice until August.
The club’s ambition is to appoint someone with an Ajax background to fill the void left by the departure of the respected football figure.
