Fire razes POWA shops in Delta community

About 40 shops within the shopping complex of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, rented out to traders in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, have been gutted by fire.

PUNCH Metro gathered that properties worth millions of naira were razed in the inferno which occurred on Sunday.

Witnesses said that the fire incident started at about 12 a.m. while efforts to get officials of the DELSU Fire Service to the scene proved abortive.

According to sources, it took the efforts of good Samaritans to put out the raging fire to avert the spread to neighbouring premises.

It was further gathered that the biggest privately-owned boutique in Abraka with goods worth over N40 million was among the shops gutted by the fire.

The owner of the said shop identified as Anita was said to have fainted on arrival at the scene of the fire incident.

Other shops destroyed by the inferno were involved in the sale of flatscreen television sets, chemicals, building materials, recharge cards and provisions.

The cause of the fire incident was unknown but some people said it could not be unconnected to high power voltage.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bright Edafe could not be reached for comments on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
