Finally! Okereke’s effort helps Cremonese claim first Serie A win against Roma
The Grigiorossi have been abysmal this season and look set for relegation, but they now have a glimmer of hope
Nigerian striker David Okereke won the penalty for Cremonese’s first goal as they claimed their first Serie A win of the season after defeating Roma 2-1.
Cremonese have been abysmal in Serie A this season. Before the game against Roma, they had failed to win any of their 23 games in Serie A. In fact, they were rooted to the bottom of the table with a paltry nine points.
However, that changed when they welcomed Roma to the Stadio Giovanni Zini.
Cremonese boss handed Nigeria striker Okereke a starting shirt while Cyriel Dessers was left on the bench.
The decision yielded fruits as Okereke proved to be a thorn in Roma’s defense. He put himself about and gave them a tough time.
17 minutes into the tie, Frank Tsadjout put Cremonese ahead with a wonderful strike from outside the box.
However, Leonardo Spinazzola equalized for Roma in the 71st minute. But the Grigiorossi pushed hard for the win late on, and they got it.
Nigerian hitman Okereke got on the end of a pass and tried to dribble past Rui Patricio and score. But he was upended by the Portuguese goalkeeper, and he won a penalty for his troubles.
Daniel Ciofani made no mistake from the spot, as he dispatched calmly to make it 2-1 and help Cremonese to their first three points of the season.
Okereke also had two successful dribbles and three tackles.
