‘Experience is gonna help us a lot’ -Ahmed Musa speaks on Nigeria’s AFCON hopes
The three-time African champions plans have been disrupted by a few withdrawals, but the captain believes they have enough experience to achieve success in Cameroon
Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has expressed the belief that the Nigerian squad’s experience would see them through at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles will go to battle in Cameroon with the hope of claiming Africa’s highest football crown.
Although Nigeria have had to deal with a few withdrawals, the three-time AFCON champions still have enough experienced players in their squad compared to 2019, when the team finished in third place after a painful loss to Algeria in the Semis.
When Nigeria travelled to Egypt in 2019, the Gernot-Rohr tutored team went with only three players with previous AFCON experience: Mikel Obi Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omeruo.
However, it is a different case this year, as most of the players in Eguavoen’s squad played in the last AFCON. And captain Musa believes that it would be an added advantage going into the Cup of Nations.
“Experience is gonna help us a lot,” Musa said in the Super Eagles press conference.
“In Egypt, we had only two players that had been in the AFCON- me and Omeruo, and we finished in the third position. And with the experience that we have, we know African football.”
“We have to keep that fantastic football at home, we just have to go all out, and with the experience that we had in Egypt, I know that we are gonna do what we are expected to do.”
The Super Eagles are expected to depart Nigeria for Cameroon on Wednesday. They begin their campaign with a clash against Egypt next week Tuesday.
