“Employing him was wrong” – Gara-Gombe calls for the sack of Super Eagles coach Peseiro
Calls for the sacking of Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, continue to grow louder as former Chairman of Gombe State Football Association, Alhaji Ahmed Shaibu Gara-Gombe, has added his voice to the chorus.
Gara-Gombe has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to terminate Peseiro's contract, citing the coach's lack of impact on the team since his appointment in May 2022.
Soccernet.ng reports that under Peseiro, the Super Eagles have lost six out of nine matches, including a recent 1-0 defeat to Guinea Bissau in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Gara-Gombe criticised Peseiro's lack of philosophy, character, pattern, or purpose and called his employment a mistake that should not be repeated.
What was said?
As per News Rangers, Gara-Gombe said: “In the first place, employing him was wrong, not to talk of giving him another contract. His past was characterised by failure, and he has maintained his tradition with the Super Eagles.
“The best thing is to invoke the termination clause of the contract and sack him. NFF shouldn't wait until he does more damage. Under Peseiro, the Super Eagles are without philosophy, character, pattern, or purpose.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. We have given so much to him, but we are getting less. Instead, we are losing matches all the time.”
Former Sporting CP, SC Braga, and Panathinaikos coach Peseiro reportedly earns $70,000 a month, a sum that many Nigerian football watchers believe is unwarranted given the team's poor performance.
There are growing calls for the NFF to seek a replacement for Peseiro and not offer him a new contract when his current one expires in May.
The Super Eagles, three-time African champions, have struggled to make an impact under Peseiro, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by fans and critics alike.
It remains to be seen whether the NFF will heed Gara-Gombe's call to sack Peseiro, especially with the Super Eagles a win away from clinching a ticket to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
