Eguavoen highlights major Super Eagles deficiency that needs to be corrected

The Super Eagles need to be at their best if they want to beat Ghana, and the gaffer has highlighted one crucial area that needs to be on point

Super Eagles interim boss Augustine Eguavoen has stated that the Super Eagles need to improve on their finishing when Nigeria battle Ghana on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles settled for a goalless draw when they locked horns with Ghana in the first leg at Kumasi. It was a drab affair, with just a few chances falling to both teams.

Although the Ghanaians had two shots on goal, the biggest opportunity of the encounter fell to Moses Simon, who received a neat pass from Kelechi Iheanacho to go one on one with the Ghanaian keeper. However, the Nantes forward fluffed his lines as Joe Wollacott blocked his poor shot.

The Super Eagles have struggled to deal with the issue of profligacy in front of goal, especially under Eguavoen. At the last Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles could have scored baskets of goals if not for poor finishing. And the same problem reared its ugly head against Ghana last week.

Nonetheless, the gaffer hopes that they can fix the issue when the three-time African champions welcome the Black Stars to the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

“We want to score goals,” Eguavoen said at the match presser as per JTV.

“The opportunities may rarely come in high-level matches like this, so when you have the chance, you have to take it.

“Ghana played very well. I’ve said from day one that they are not a pushover, they are a team we respect, and they respect the Nigerian team as well.

“In the first leg, there was no big clear cut chance for the Ghanaian team, but we came close to scoring. So tomorrow, every chance we get must count. Scoring goals is what we are trying to correct.”

The match promises to be a tough one, especially as it is a derby. But Nigeria must be deadly in front of goal, as only a victory would see the Super Eagles through to Qatar.
