Dessers, Iheanacho, Osimhen, Tijani and others: Transfer updates – Exploring Nigerian players who has moved and who has stayed

In this 2023 Summer transfer window, some Nigerian players are making a switch to new clubs, while others will stay with their current teams for the coming season

The transfer window has opened for European clubs to change their squads. While some Nigerian players are already on the move, some are still at their present clubs, Soccernet.ng monitors the current situations of Nigerian players in this transfer window.

Not Moved

Iheanacho and Ndidi (Leicester City)

Both Nigerian Internationals have been linked with a move from the King Power stadium following Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League. And of recent, Leicester City’s manager Enzo Maresca has permitted the players that are unwilling to continue with the club to leave, opening the door for Iheanacho and Ndidi to seek a new challenge elsewhere.

Aribo and Onuachu (Southampton)

It has not gone as planned for both Aribo and Onuachu since moving to the Premier League, correlating with Southampton being downgraded to Championship. While Aribo came up with two goals for the Saints, Onuachu failed to register in 11 appearances, resulting in both players being linked with a move away from the club.

Victor Osimhen (Napoli)

The Napoli striker has been one of the headlines of this transfer window, and that could still see the 23-year-old leave Italy as the African player with the biggest transfer fee before the window close. He has been of interest to the biggest clubs in Europe, with Chelsea, Manchester United, and PSG reported to be among his suitors, but Napoli’s president Adeola has continued to maintain the player is not leaving the club this summer.

Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal)

Chukwueze has been linked all summer with a move to Italy with AC Milan and has been reported to be on the priority list for the Italian club. The 24-year-old will be a good addition to any team in Europe, and a move away from Spain can not be ruled out before the window’s end.

Moved

William Troot-Ekong (Watford to Paok)

Troost-Ekong spent the second half of last season in Italy with Salernitana after joining from Watford. He has recently signed for Greek side PAOK on a four years deal.

Peter Olayinka (Slavia Praha to Red Star Belgrade)

Olayinka left the Czech Republic after five years with Slavia Prague, where he made 183 appearances and scored 50 goals. He has joined Serbian Champions Red Star Belgrade as a free agent and a 3-year deal.

Cyriel Dessers (US Cremonese to Rangers)

Dessers has left Italy to join Rangers following Cremonese’s relegation from Serie A at the end of last season. He signed for the Scottish club for £5m on a four years contract.

Tijani Muhamed (Banik Ostrava to Slavia Praha)

Signed by Slavia as a direct replacement for his compatriot Peter Olayinka, Tijani signed a 5-year contract with the Czech Republic cupholders
