Contract showdown: Victor Osimhen and Napoli on verge of agreement for two-year extension
Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has announced that he is prepared to offer Victor Osimhen a two-year contract extension upon his return to Naples, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osimhen is currently in Lagos after he played a crucial role in Nigeria’s Super Eagles triumph over Sierra Leone, securing their qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The talented 24-year-old striker showcased his prowess by netting two goals in Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory over the Leone Stars, bringing his season tally to seven goals in the AFCON qualifiers and 38 goals across all competitions for both club and country.
Osimhen’s contributions have been particularly significant for Napoli, as he scored 31 goals this term, with an impressive 26 of those goals coming in the Italian Serie A.
These goals were vital in securing the Scudetto, Napoli’s first league title in 33 years.
Consequently, Osimhen’s exceptional form has elevated him to the status of the most valuable player in Serie A’s history and attracted interest from top clubs worldwide, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.
However, Napoli appear reluctant to part ways with their prized striker unless a staggering offer of €150 million materialises.
During the presentation of Napoli’s new coach, Rudi Garcia, President Aurelio De Laurentiis emphasised his priority is to extend Osimhen’s contract.
De Laurentiis firmly stated that only an extraordinary offer would compel him to consider selling the Nigerian sensation.
He expressed his unwavering intention to keep Osimhen in Naples, stating, “Will he (Osimhen) stay? I didn’t tell Garcia; I’ve said it for some time: Osimhen must stay. Then we’ll see if an important offer arrives for Napoli’s good.
“Renewal? I already spoke with him before the party; we have agreed in principle on extending the contract for another two years.”
Osimhen joined Napoli from Lille in 2020 for a fee that made him the most expensive African player in history.
