Brighton are looking to sign Levi Colwill from Chelsea permanently, but the Blues are demanding a huge fee
Premier League club Brighton are weighing up a move for Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as a replacement for Levi Colwill, Soccernet.ng reports.
Bassey has struggled badly at Ajax since joining the club last summer. His transfer coincided with a transition period for the club. They had just lost coach Erik Ten Hag to Manchester United, defender Lisandro Martinez, and other important players.
As such, he was expected to hit the ground running. Unfortunately, the former Rangers man has failed to adapt to the club's style well.
Bassey has gotten a lot of flack from former Ajax players this season. In fact, most of them have not held back, they even questioned the club's decision to buy him.
Bassey started just one of Ajax's final ten games of the season.17-year-old Jorrel Hato was preferred over him.
As it stands, Bassey would likely be a peripheral figure at the club next season if he does not adapt. However, he may be put out of his misery soon.
According to Football Transfers, Brighton are looking at Bassey in case they fail to sign Levi Colwill from Chelsea.
Brighton have already submitted a bid of €35million, but Chelsea are not willing to budge. But Bassey would be a cheaper option, as Ajax may not demand more than €20million for the 23-year-old defender.
If the move goes through, it would be a return to English football, as he started his career at the Leicester City academy before leaving for Rangers three seasons ago.
