“Best striker in Europe” – Portuguese manager hails Victor Osimhen despite poor showing versus GB
The Nigeria international was far from his clinical best as the Super Eagles struggled for goals across two games against the Djurtus
Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has spoken out in support of Victor Osimhen after the striker failed to convert several good chances during Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Monday night.
Osimhen, who has been in outstanding form for Napoli this season, has struggled to replicate his club performances for the national team in recent matches. He missed several good chances, including hitting the goalpost with a low drive, during both legs of the fixtures against Guinea-Bissau.
Despite this, Peseiro has come out in defense of the 24-year-old forward, claiming Osimhen feels more pressure while playing for the Super Eagles than he does for his club.
“Victor is the best striker in Europe, but it happens (not to score a goal),” Portuguese tactician Peseiro said during his post-match interview.
“He fights for the team, but he feels more pressure in the national team than in Napoli, and that’s not good.”
Despite Osimhen’s recent struggles in front of goal, he is currently the joint top goal scorer – alongside Senegal forward Sadio Mane – in the qualifiers with five goals.
Peseiro’s comments will be welcome news for Osimhen, who will be hoping to rediscover his scoring touch when Nigeria face Sierra Leone in their next AFCON qualifier in June.
