Aribo’s Southampton edge past Everton in Iwobi’s ‘desperate’ comeback
Southampton overcame a deficit to worsen Everton’s miseries and increase the pressure on Frank Lampard with a 1–2 win at Goodison Park.
Despite not playing at their best, the Saints were able to gain an advantage on their trip to Merseyside thanks to their win against the all-powerful Manchester City.
Things might have looked much worse for Nathan Jones’s team in the first few minutes, when Everton seized the lead when Amadou Onana headed in Demarai Gray’s exquisite cross.
James Ward-Prowse quickly equalized in the second half for the Saints, who were unrelenting in their effort thanks to some excellent agility inside the area.
The Black Watch got their chance to get an advantage in the game, but were unlucky when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strike hit the crossbar.
However, with an incredible free kick beyond Jordan Pickford in the 78th minute, the Saint’s captain grabbed a crucial three points for his team.
While Alex Iwobi made a shocking return to the starting line-up for the game and played the whole 90 minutes, his presence was not really felt as much as we may have expected.
“Alex Iwobi has proven his fitness. He had a great week himself which shows how professional he is – he was desperate to be involved in this game.”

Joe Aribo, however, was not used as a substitute in his team’s triumph on the road and could only cheer them from the bench.
Lampard’s team is two points from safety and shares 15 points with Southampton and West Ham in the relegation zone of the standings.
As they fall farther into the relegation zone, the Merseysiders may experience relegation for the first time since the Premier League began, which will only add to their misery.
