Appoint strategists to tackle policy failure, NESG tells Tinubu

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Economic Summit Group,  Dr. Tayo Aduloju, has called on President Bola Tinubu, and state governors among others to consider appointing professional strategists among their routine aides.

He said this is to ensure the effective implementation of government policies.

Aduloju spoke during the induction of 122 new fellows of the  Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said, “I think executive offices as we have seen governors, senators, and others in key strategic offices appoint everybody else from technical assistants to special advisers but you will hardly see a  strategist who is in charge of managing not just strategy formulation but strategy execution and measuring strategic success.

“The imperatives of an office of strategic management are the challenge of our time that strategic managers must transcend also, not just in the institutions but in their minds.

“A recent survey showed that 9 out of 10 businesses on the continent are failing to execute their strategy in 75% of the cases of strategy failure.

“The problem is not about the absence of a good strategy, the problem is execution. It seems therefore that a body of strategies now transcends our capacity to build ground strategies at the continental, regional, national, corporate, or even team level. ”

He also called for the establishment of Strategic Offices across various government parastatals to enhance the execution of government policies.

“I believe key government institutions and programmes should go beyond project management office offices to having offices of strategic management.”

A total of seven military senior officers were inducted.  They include Maj. Gen. Adetokubo Fayemi,  Group Captain Emmanuel Abu,  Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola, AVM Oahimire Pius and Rear Admiral Olukoya Olutayo among others.

Speaking on behalf of the military personnel,  AVM Daramola,  noted that being a fellow would build their capacities to enhance security in the country.

He said, “Our investiture as Fellows is just another feather in the cap of our capacity-building efforts as members of the armed forces. And the essence is to espouse show for all the tenets of strategic leadership, professionalism, research, and development.

“Being members of this institute will help us to add value to what they are doing, increase our own body of knowledge, and bring that to bear as we go ahead in continuing to add value to the service and ultimately to enhance the security of the nation for the peace and well-being of Nigeria.”
