Bafana Bafana have surprised many during this tournament and have already surpassed their previous quarter-final finish in their last appearance at AFCON in 2018. South Africa eased themselves out of a difficult group despite being defeated by Mali in their opening match, setting themselves up for a hugely challenging clash against favourites Morocco in the last 16. 

Yet, the 2010 World Cup hosts stunned the Atlas Lions with a convincing 2-0 win, and then narrowly beat a difficult Cape Verde side (0-0, 1-2 on penalties) to set up a huge encounter with Nigeria. If they beat the Super Falcons, they could be one match away from re-creating their 1996 AFCON triumph.

Ivory Coast vs DR Congo

The Elephants were one of the favourites coming into the competition, but a disastrous group stage which included a shocking 4-0 loss against Equatorial Guinea saw the hosts on the brink of elimination, even firing their manager Jean-Louis Gasset.

Morocco saved The Elephants with a win over Zambia (1-0), which set up what looked like an impossible test against Senegal. The tournament hosts won against the previous AFCON winners against all the odds, before dramatically beating Mali right at the end of extra-time whilst down to 10-men (2-1). The Elephants are only now one game from completing a redemption arc for the ages in front of their home crowd, with DR Congo the opposition standing in their way.

What Is the AFCON?

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the most prestigious football tournament in the African continent. The competition is organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and all 54 countries associated with CAF are eligible to participate. However, only 24 countries can make it to the tournament after a qualifying round is held among the 54 nations.

AFCON was first held in 1957 in Sudan, where three countries (Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia) participated. Egypt won the first-ever tournament and currently has 7 titles to their name, the most by any other country.
