Vincent Enyeama’s long-standing record survives as Zambian goalkeeper retires

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper hung his football boots three years ago, but his legacy in the game continues to endure

Vincent Enyeama’s remarkable goalscoring record remains intact as Zambia’s Kennedy Mweene calls time on his career, Soccernet.ng reports.

38-year-old Mweene, who represented Mamelodi Sundowns and the Zambian national team, bids farewell to football after an impressive 20-year journey.

Mweene departs as the second-highest-scoring African goalkeeper, falling just behind legendary Nigerian icon, Enyeama.

During his tenure with Mamelodi Sundowns, Mweene achieved significant success, clinching an array of trophies that include eight Premier Soccer League titles, two Nedbank Cups, two Telkom Knockout titles, the illustrious CAF Champions League, and the glorious CAF Super Cup.

On the international stage, Mweene played a pivotal role in Zambia’s historic triumph at the 2012 African Cup of Nations, a moment that his compatriots will forever cherish.

Moreover, Mweene’s legacy extends beyond his goalkeeping prowess. Known for his penalty-taking abilities, the Zambian national team and Free State Stars regularly entrusted him with spot-kick duties, resulting in 13 career goals.

Nevertheless, it is former Lille goalie Enyeama who reigns supreme as Africa’s premier goalscoring goalkeeper.

The charismatic and reliable Nigerian stalwart found the back of the net on 20 occasions throughout his career, with ten goals registered during his tenure with Enyimba and eight while donning the colors of Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Enyeama’s achievements include three Nigerian Premier League titles, two CAF Champions League triumphs, two Israeli Premier League victories, and two Israel State Cup conquests.

Furthermore, he received esteemed accolades such as the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé and the title of the Greatest African Goalkeeper of all Time by IFFHS earlier this year.

Enyeama’s crowning glory arrived in 2013 when he played an instrumental role in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations victory, earning a place in the Team of the Tournament.

His contributions firmly cemented his status as one of the most esteemed African goalkeepers of all time and of his era.
