“He is big and powerful”- Ex-Manchester City midfielder talks up Dessers’ move to Rangers

Rangers have not won the league in the last two seasons, but Lennon believes Dessers could help them change that

Former Manchester City midfielder Neil Lennon believes Rangers’ decision to buy Cyriel Dessers from Cremonese was a good piece of business, Soccernet reports.

28-year-old Nigerian striker Dessers just sealed a transfer to former Scottish Premiership champions Rangers in a deal worth €5million.

He switched from Cremonese after a disappointing first campaign in the Serie A. The former Genk man failed to help the club survive relegation, as he scored seven goals in 32 appearances.

Rangers lost some of their attacking firepower this summer, with first-choice striker Alfredo Morelos, and they would be banking on Dessers’ quality next season.

The Nigerian striker has garnered a lot of experience over the course of his nine-year-career. Dessers has played at eight clubs so far, and Rangers is his ninth.

Former Manchester City player Lennon who also coached Celtic has praised Rangers for their decision to get the Nigerian striker.

“I watched him[Dessers] when he was at Heracles and he was the leading goalscorer in the Dutch league that season, Lennon said per Glasgow Live.

He’s a big, powerful player with a little bit of technique sometimes, with the soft feet.

“But he’s a goalscorer, and I think at £4.5million, he could be a great bit of business for Rangers. They needed a striker, and they’ve got one in the building now.

“His goal record is good, and he’s a physical type. Quick, strong and has a goal in him. For £4.5million, that’s decent business.”

Dessers has resumed pre-season with Rangers in Germany. They will play Newcastle United, Hamburger SV, Olympiakos, and Hoffenheim.
