Ajax hero reveals stance on Rangers-linked Super Eagles striker

Dessers have been heavily linked with a transfer to Ibrox this summer, and Ajax legend De Boer has revealed his stance

Former Ajax midfielder Ronald de De Boer has stated that he believes that Super Eagles striker Cyril Dessers is a good striker. Still, he can be ineffective when he does not have confidence.

Soccernet reports that Dessers has been on Rangers’ radar since the end of last season. He signed for Ceremonese from Genk last summer, but his first season was a failure, as he could only manage six goals and two assists in 26 games.

Eventually, after an abysmal season, the Grigiorossi got relegated from the Serie A. Following their drop, the club would be open to letting some players leave.

Former Scottish Premiership champions Rangers are trying to exploit that as they have been hot on Dessers’ heels. However, the 28-year-old hitman still has three years left on his current deal, and Cremonese can afford to play tough.

Dessers has never played in the Premiership, but with his quality, he could adapt easily. Former Ajax star believes the Nigerian could come good for the Gers. Nonetheless, he has also warned that Dessers could have bad patches if he is not well managed.

What did De Boer say about Dessers?

“Dessers might be a little more suitable for Scottish football because he’s more physical as a No.9,” De Boer said per Glasgow Live.

“But it depends on what kind of team and what kind of team and what kind of philosophy you have.

“That is something crucial. If you want a guy who waits for the moment, doesn’t get involved that much in the build-up and gets in the box, then it’s Dessers.

“Dessers is a very opportunistic player. If he’s not in form, or when the confidence is not there, he’s a very limited player. Then you think, ‘Who the hell did we sign here!’.

“But when the guy has confidence, then you think, ‘Woah! Where is this coming from?’. Because when he’s playing at his best, he does everything on instinct. He waits for his prey, and then he attacks.

“But, for me, he’s a player who, when he’s feeling comfortable, and the manager believes in him, he can add a lot of value.

“But it all depends on if he’s feeling good. If he feels good, he’ll give Rangers a lot of pleasure. But it can also go the other way.

“If you want a type like Morelos, then there is no doubt you go for Dessers. You would get from Dessers is a much better work ethic than Morelos gave Rangers over the last year.

Rangers have not won the Scottish Premiership for the last two seasons. Dessers could come in handy as they look to push Celtic for the title next season.
