Super Eagles coach Peseiro shuts door on new invitees amid blurry future

Following their victory over Sierra Leone, the Super Eagles of Nigeria secured their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations competition with a game remaining against São Tomé and Príncipe

Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has underscored the significance of continuity, shutting doors on the invitation of some new faces in his squad, Soccernet.ng reports.

With a game to spare, Peseiro’s troops edged past Sierra Leone at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia on Sunday to secure a ticket to play in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The Portuguese boss, speaking to the media after the game, despite his contract expiration, shrank the possibility of introducing some new faces into the squad, having qualified for the tournament already.

Peseiro highlighted that constant changes to the team would impede progress and hinder the development of the squad’s organization.

“We have one national team, and there is time that we can work to improve the team,” stated Peseiro. “If I change the team all the time, I will never be able to improve our organization.”

Peseiro firmly believes in the importance of building a cohesive team over time, as the Super Eagles only have a limited number of days to prepare for matches. He emphasized the need for a strategic balance between short-term success and long-term development.

“While we aim to create more dynamics and organization against São Tomé [and Principe], we must consider how these changes will impact our preparations for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON),” added Peseiro. “The door to the Super Eagles is open for everybody.”
