Nigerian striker, Victor Okoh Boniface, has set sights on Jupiler Pro League title triumph, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 22-year-old plies his trade with Belgian side Union St.Gilloise, a team that had a brilliant campaign in the UEFA Europa League, and can potentially win silverware to crown a season that has been nothing short of sensational.
Boniface put his side in a strong position after scoring the equalizer against Tolu Arokodare’s Genk yesterday in a game that ended 1-1.
The draw means Union have to win their remaining two games against title rivals Royal Antwerp and Club Brugge in the playoff Championship group.
The Playoff Championship round is unlike the league formats of the top European leagues, where the team with the most points at the end of the season get the title. The Belgian league runs on a slightly different format.
With 18 teams in the league, each team plays against all the other teams twice in home and away fixtures. The team in 18th place gets relegated into the second division, while the team in the 17th place get into a two-legged play-off with the team that is in the 2nd position of the second division to either confirm their safety in the top flight or their relegation.
However, for the winner to be announced, the top four teams in the league table after 34 games are drawn into the “Playoff Championship round”. Their points are halved, and they play against the remaining three teams twice, in-home and away fixtures, and whoever remains top after these games are announced as to be the winner of the league.
Union St.Gilloise have played four out of the six playoff games, left with just two games, and are level on points with Royal Antwerp, whom they face next weekend.
