AFCON Qualifiers: Jose Peseiro provides Troost-Ekong injury update ahead of Guinea-Bissau tie

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are scheduled to play Guinea Bissau on March 24 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has provided an update on William Troost-Ekong’s injury ahead of the African Cup of Nations qualifiers tie against Guinea-Bissau.

The Nigerian defender fractured his tibial plateau, which US Salernitana had reported would keep him out for two weeks.

Nonetheless, the vice-captain of Nigeria has made a full recovery after suffering an injury in mid-February during a league game against Hellas Verona.

The Watford loanee recently shared a picture of himself on social media jogging for the first time since the injury. He expressed his happiness and satisfaction at being able to take this significant step in his recuperation.

Despite this, the former manager of Venezuela, who is in Italy to monitor his team before the next AFCON qualifiers, told SportItalia that the former KAA Gent player is making a lot of effort to recuperate but has little chance of playing in the opening leg of the doubleheader match.

“He is our captain. I know he really wanted to go and play there. He told me often. I am in contact with the trainers and coaches of the Nigerian players: those of Ekong told me that he is working a lot, although there is not much chance of taking him with us in the next games. My friend Paulo Sousa also confirmed this to me.” he said.

Troost-Ekong left Watford to join Salernitana during the winter transfer window, although he has already missed four games for the Serie A team.
