AFCON 2023: Gambia coach delivers warning to Flying Eagles ahead of semi-final clash

Gambia’s Young Scorpions have won all of their games in the 2023 AFCON competition, including their most recent rout of South Sudan in the quarterfinal

The head coach of the Gambia U-20, Abdoulie Bojang, sends a warning to their next opponent Nigeria while looking beyond clinching a spot at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The coach is pleased that his team qualified for the semi-finals of the 17th edition of the AFCON competition, but he has given his team a new goal: to defeat Nigeria, advance to the final, and take home the gold.

The Nigerian Flying Eagles may not have played well in their opening match against Senegal, but they were able to bounce back and overcome Egypt, Mozambique, and Uganda to advance to the tournament’s semifinals.

The Young Scorpions, who have won all of their games so far, including most recently a 5-nil demolition of South Sudan, have nonetheless established themselves as one of the successful teams in this current tournament.

Bojang has expressed his happiness for his team’s route to the semifinals after the last victory.

“We have qualified to the World Cup and to the semi-finals again. Last edition the team were bronze medalists and this time we wanted to improve on that,” he remarked, as reported by CAFonline.

Gambia has been placed to face their West African neighbours in the semi-finals, and the former Scorpions star has claimed that his squad is aiming for gold.

“The next opponent is Nigeria. It’s a very important game now we have to forget about the South Sudan game.

“We’ve already qualified, now we’re looking for the gold medal, but we have to win the Nigeria game so we can reach the final and clinch the gold.” he said.

Ladan Bosso’s boys will face Gambia in the 2023 AFCON semi-final on Monday at the Cairo International Stadium.
