“Reminds me of Drogba” – Arsenal legend urges Chelsea to sign 21-goal Super Eagles striker, Osimhen
The Nigeria international could be set for a record-making move to England in the summer following an exceptional year in Italy
Former Arsenal icon Emmanuel Petit has called on Chelsea to prioritise the signing of Victor Osimhen as the Napoli forward reminds him of Ivorian legend Didier Drogba.
Chelsea have been linked to Victor Osimhen in previous transfer windows, with the Stamford Bridge giants keen to add a quality striker to their richly-assembled personnel.
The Blues have struggled somewhat with a striker’s curse with only Didier Drogba and, to an extent, Diego Costa excelling in that number nine role over the past decade or two.
And Emmanuel Petit, who played for both Arsenal and Chelsea during a hugely successful career, is convinced Osimhen has the physical and footballing qualities to excel in London.
What has been said?
“If I was Chelsea, I would go for Osimhen over the likes of Marcus Thuram,” the 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning star said, as per Football London.
“You know there is a striker’s curse at Chelsea but someday this will be broken and he could do it. I have followed Osimhen since he played for Lille and he was already a very good striker.
“Since he left for Italy, where the pressure is very high and the fans are passionate, he’s played brilliantly. They have so much pace in their game and he is physical, clinical and very confident about his quality.
“If Chelsea can bring in Osimhen, that’d be very good for them. He reminds me of Drogba somewhat. He certainly possesses the same qualities as him.”
Victor Osimhen will not leave Napoli on the cheap, though, as some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and PSG, reportedly want him.
The 24-year-old deserves all the attention coming his way after scoring 21 goals and assisting four in 25 appearances in all competitions for Napoli.
The Super Eagles striker is one of the main reasons Napoli are leading the way in Serie A and are the hot favourites to win the Champions League.
Napoli have made it clear they are not under any financial pressure to sell the former Lille lad. It may require another African transfer fee of over £100 million to convince the club to part with their moist-prized asset.
