Iwobi’s boss at Everton gets the sack
Lampard helped the Toffees stay up last season, but results have not gone their way this season
English Premier League club Everton have confirmed the sacking of coach Frank Lampard.
Lampard replaced Rafael Benitez at Everton in January 2022 after the club recorded a series of poor results. He had a slow start, but he helped the club preserve their Premier League status after a tough relegation fight.
With Lampard as coach, some Everton stars have improved, most notable of which is Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi.
However, results have not gone Everton’s way this season. They had a good start to the season, but they have tailed off in the last three months.
The Toffees have lost eight of their last twelve Premier League games, and they sit rock bottom on the table, with just 15 points after 20 games.
Following Lampard’s poor run, Everton have confirmed that they have parted ways with the 44-year-old coach.
“Everton can confirm that Frank Lampard has left his post as Senior Men’s First Team Manager today,” the club wrote.
“Paul Tait and Leighton Baines will take training until a new manager is appointed.”
Asides from helping Everton stay up last season, Lampard had a great impact on Iwobi. The Super Eagles midfielder used to be a topic of banter at Everton. In fact, he used to be the scapegoat whenever they lost games.
However, Iwobi became a changed man in February. Lampard played him as a wingback, and he excelled in that position.
This season, Iwobi has operated from midfield, and he has been brilliant. He has one goal and five assists in 20 league games. And he has been nominated for player of the month once.
Lampard may not have improved Everton, but Iwobi is the biggest beneficiary of his presence at Goodison Park.
