‘It just made me hotter’- Okoye speaks after reckless treatment from fans
The Super Eagles star spectacular for Sparta Rotterdam last week, but his brilliance sparked off callous treatments from the opposing fans
Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has revealed that he is not affected by the poor treatment he received from Vitesse fans after saving a penalty in their 1-0 victory at the GelreDome.
The Watford loanee was the star of the game last Monday, making nine saves, including a 64th-minute penalty. However, his brilliance sparked harsh treatment from the home fans, as he was angrily approached by a pitched invader.
Just before the end of the game, the home fans started throwing objects and hurling racist chants at him, giving the match officials no other option than to end the game abruptly.
However, the 22-year-old is surprised but unfazed by the harsh treatment and is ready to push on with his team as they look to avoid relegation.
“I have never experienced anything like this. So far, I only knew something like that from television,” Okoye said as per West German newspaper
“These so-called fans probably didn’t know that it only pushes me even more. It just made me hotter.
“I’m very optimistic about the upcoming games. If we stick together, then we will stay in this league. He added.
Sparta Rotterdam sits rock bottom on the Dutch Eredivisie log, three points away from safety. Nonetheless, Okoye would look to help his team in their remaining ten games of the season.
