Transport institute holds first-quarter induction

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria, on Wednesday, held its first-quarter induction and investiture ceremony, themed ‘Professional Development in Transport in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.’

The chairman of the occasion, Dr. Kayode Finsta, who is the executive director of the Centre of Sustainable Mobility and Access Development, while making his opening remarks, urged the federal ministry of transportation to produce a compendium of decisions made by the national council of transport in a bid to improve the sector.

Dr. Opeifa in his speech disclosed that in 2002, the national council of transport held a summit where the federal ministry of transportation was advised to set up a master plan for railway system and other means of transportation.

He said, “Also, in that summit, I said in my paper that the ministry should set up a rail master plan, that was then in 2002, that was 21 years ago, we are still in phase 1 moving to phase 2.

“Enactments have been assented to law by the President to remove railway from the exclusive to concurrent, that makes it more imperative to look at that plan for railway and other transport system.

“So, in all the national councils of transport that have held up till now, I am going to suggest that the ministry should produce a compendium for us and CIOTA to partner the ministry so that we can see how far we have gone and those things we have not done,” he added.

He urged the CIOTA to work closely with the ministry of transportation in a bid to ensure those that worked in the ministry were chartered transporters.

Prof. Callistus Ibe of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, who gave the induction lecture advised the inducted fellows, members and associates to develop a professional image and take new initiatives to solve problems.

“As professionals in the field, as a matter of necessity, continue to learn,” he said.

The CIOTA’s chairman, Segun Finsta, who presented plaques to the inductees said the institute was committed to upgrading and bring the best practice to the operation of transportation in Nigeria.
