Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Sunday, 7th August, 2022

Good morning Nigeria, welcome to Ezenwoko’s Blog roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today Sunday, 7th August 2022.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, and former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, have refused to take active roles in the presidential campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ezenwoko’s Blog understands that the party’s leadership has begun moves to appease the former presidential aspirants.

The trio of Osinbajo, Lawan, and Amaechi have remained noncommittal towards the presidential bid of Tinubu and activities in the ruling party.

Sources have accused Bola Tinubu of not consulting widely with key stakeholders, especially with the trio, on issues that concern his presidential campaign, preferring, instead, to speak to Northern APC governors.

No fewer than four police officers were killed in an attack, at the Agwa Divisional Police headquarters in Imo state by unknown gunmen who are wreaking havoc in the Southeastern part of the country.

Ezenwoko’s Blog learned that the incident occurred on Friday night when the assailants invaded the area shooting sporadically before gaining access to the station.

Two male officers were shot dead while two female police officers were burnt to death and a vehicle belonging to one belonging to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was burnt.

According to the sources who spoke with The Punch, the gunmen came in a tipper vehicle and two sienna cars and invaded the police division.

Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State on Friday submitted a petition at the Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo to challenge the outcome of the July 16 governorship election, which produced Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor-elect of the state.

Ezenwoko’s Blog gathered that Oyetola was accompanied by his wife, Kafayat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in the state, Prince Gboyega Famodun, and some members of the state executive council.

According to reports, the Governor and the party submitted documents challenging 749 polling units across ten local government areas of the state for various electoral malpractice, especially overvoting.

Oyetola, through the petition, claimed that the Osun gubernatorial election was fraught with certain irregularities, adding that Senator Adeleke was not qualified to have contested the election in the first place, having allegedly submitted a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The alleged plan by some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to influence the appointment of Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State as the Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation has caused tension in the party.

Those against such plans believe that appointing Tambuwal as DG will be disastrous to the main opposition party following current outcries by southerners who are already complaining about the north’s grip on the party’s chairmanship, BoT chairmanship, presidential candidate, and positions of chief spokespersons for the campaign council.

The name of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has been mentioned but his re-election may hamper his commitment to the presidential campaign as he may find it difficult to combine both.

However, some PDP stalwarts would prefer the appointment of Governor Nyesom Wike as the Presidential Campaign Council DG to appease the Rivers Governor and restore peace to the party.

Nigerian Governors have advised President Muhammadu Buhari to retire all federal civil servants who are older than 50 years.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that then governors also advised the federal government to raise taxes across boars as well as levy anyone earning N30,000 and above monthly.

According to Premium Times, the Nigerian governors made the proposal at a meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in July 2022.

The platform stated that the governors advised the government in a bid to prevent the nation from imminent economic collapse.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been sued over its refusal to provide the Certified True Copies (CTCs) of documents relating to the presidential nomination of the candidate of the All Progressives Conges (APC), Bola Tinubu.

In a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1337/2022, an Abuja-based lawyer, Mike Enahoro-Ebah sued the electoral commission for refusing to release Tinubu’s credentials.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that the Commission is the only defendant in the suit.

The lawyer is also seeking an order asking INEC to release Tinubu’s nomination forms submitted when he contested the Lagos governorship election in 1999 and 2003, respectively.

The family house of the minority leader in the Osun State House of Assembly, Kofoworola Babajide, has been set ablaze by hoodlums.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that the lawmaker made this known while speaking to journalists on Saturday in Ede.

Babajide said the thugs attacked his parent’s house in Ede after attacking him and some PDP members during a ward meeting in the town on Friday evening.

The lawmaker disclosed that his father has not been seen since his house was burnt down and the incident has created panic among the residents of the town.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has denied responsibility for the gruesome murder of eight northerners living in Orogwe, a suburb community in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that the outlawed group stated this in a statement on Saturday by its spokesman, Emma Powerful.

Powerful alleged that the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies are conniving with Ebubeagu operatives in killing innocent people in order to blackmail the secessionist group.

He stated that anybody linking IPOB to the recent attack in Imo State is doing that to demonise and blackmail the group and its members.

Thousands of Youths in Nasarawa State have taken to the streets to declare support for the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2023 election.

Despite claims that the LP has no structure and it would be difficult for the former Governor of Anambra State to win the presidential election, many youths have continued to pledge support for him.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that a walk tagged ‘One Million March’ for Peter Obi, was held in Nasarawa state today, 6th August and the state stands still for the event.

Photos and videos which emerged online show huge numbers of men, women and youths, carrying the flag of LP and chanting various songs.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Iyorchia Ayu has expressed readiness to do anything to restore peace to the main opposition party.

Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that loyalists of Governor Nyesom Wike are insisting that Senator Ayu resigns from his position as northerners cannot occupy all major positions in the PDP.

According to Wike’s camp, the PDP chairman had displaced his partiality when he described Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State as the ‘hero’ of the party’s convention for stepping down for the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

At a meeting convened by the main opposition party Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Ayu had given a condition for his resignation if the stakeholders are adamant about his exit.
