Sylvester Oromoni: Police React To Death Of Dowen College Student

The Lagos Police Command has begun probing circumstances surrounding the controversial death of a 12-year-old student of Dowen College in Lekki, Sylvester Oromoni.

Ezenwoko’s Blog had earlier reported that Oromoni was allegedly beaten to a pulp by his fellow students in the school for refusing to join a cult.

Perrie, an uncle to Oromoni in a post on his Twitter account disclosed that his cousin suffered severe injuries which led to his death.

He added that the late student was subjected to bullying, torture and harassment.

However, the school denied allegations that the student was beaten for refusing to join a cult group, claiming that the deceased sustained injuries while playing football.

According to the school, Oromoni was given immediate medical attention by the school’s resident nurse, claims the family have denied.

The incident has sparked a lot of outrage with many Nigerians demanding justice for the deceased and his family.

But in a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday by its spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, the Lagos Police Command said the investigation into the death of Oromoni has now been taken over by the Homicide Section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Ajisebutu stated that the Divisional Police Officer, Maroko Division, has been directed by the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to immediately visit the school to carry out the initial investigation.

He said: “In view of the seriousness of the case, the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, has also been directed to take over the investigation of the case immediately.”

The Lagos State Government had directed the indefinite shut down of the school pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of the late student.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Lagos Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, ordered the indefinite closure of the school.

The commissioner stated the state government took the decision after a meeting with the school management and staff on Friday afternoon.
