Rohr: Pinnick clarifies NFF’s position on Super Eagles coach amid sack rumours
The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to the rumours flying around that the Super Eagles manager has been relieved of his duties
NFF president Amaju Pinnick has shut down the reports that Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has been sacked after more than five years in charge.
There were rumours across some online sites (not Soccernet) that NFF has taken the decision to part ways with the former Burkina Faso manager.
However, Pinnick has come out to clarify NFF’s position, saying Rohr has not been sacked, but his position is being reviewed.
“The Board of the NFF is studying the report of the Technical Committee, which it submitted after the match against Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday,” Pinnick said in a statement released to the media.
“There are a number of possibilities, but we have not taken a decision to sack Gernot Rohr,” he clarified.
“I want to assure that whatever decision is eventually taken will be one that will please the generality of Nigerians,” he added.
Rohr has been in charge of the Super Eagles since 2016 and has led the Super Eagles to two major tournaments during this time.
However, lately, his position has come under immense pressure due to the Super Eagles’ poor performance in recent games.
Although the Super Eagles have qualified for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations and CAF 2022 World Cup qualifier playoffs, the general consensus is that the team has regressed under his management, and a change is needed.
But should the NFF decide to sack him, they will have to pay him a severance package as he is still on course to meet the targets set for him in the contract extension he signed last year.
