Police rescue two from Akwa Ibom mob
Akwa Ibom Police command said it rescued two persons from being burnt to death by a mob in two different local government areas of the state.
This was contained in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macedon, titled “Stop Jungle Justice. Jungle Justice is travesty of justice” on Tuesday.
The victims include one Ubong Sunny Ossom who hailed from Ikot Edebe village in Nsit Atai LGA and stole two bottles of Campari at Godslight Supermarket, Ekpene Ukim, in Uruan LGA.
Christian Effiong of Nung Atai Okoko village in Okobo LGA stole a generator at Mount Zion church, Ikot Ambon in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.
Macedon who said that the victims were both rescued on the verge of being burnt after they were caught for stealing, expressed concern over the trend, which he said, was “becoming too frequent and alarming”.
The statement read, “Before 12 noon of today, July 18th, 2023, the Akwa Ibom Police command had rescued two victims of jungle justice.
“They were both rescued at the verge of being burnt after they were caught for stealing. This trend is becoming too frequent and alarming.
“Whereas the Command condemns in totality the act of stealing which is a crime, subjecting the perpetrators to jungle justice is not in tandem with our legal system.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi has therefore warned perpetrators to desist forthwith or face arrest and prosecution”
