Once beaten, twice shy: Super Eagles’ 2013 Afcon winner sacked by Denizlispor again

Once beaten, twice shy: Super Eagles’ 2013 Afcon winner sacked by Denizlispor again

The Roosters have concluded that their Nigerian import no longer align with their objective of gaining instant promotion to the elite league

As per Turkish publications Hurriyet, Denizlispor have terminated the contract of Nigerian midfielder Ogenyi Eddy Onazi, barely four months after he joined the TFF First League side on a free transfer.

And this is the second time in less than 18 months that Denizlispor will be rendering the former Lazio defensive midfielder without a club.

Onazi first teamed up with the Roosters – then playing in the Turkish Super Lig – in January 2020 after ending his five-and-a-half-year association with league rivals Trabzonspor.

But he was shown the exit door six months later after failing to live up to the club’s expectations.

Shortly after, the 28-year-old picked up the pieces of his career at Danish side SonderjyskE before switching to Lithuania’s Zalgiris in February.

Denizlispor, having been relegated to the second-tier league at the end of the last campaign, then showed interest in resigning Onazi in the summer, and he did not hesitate to return there in August.

But yet again, after another internal club evaluation exercise, Denizlispor have found the former Super Eagles star below the required quality and have decided to part ways with him.

A former Golden Eaglets hero, Onazi is a product of My People FC and Lazio academy.

The midfielder boasts 51 international caps for Nigeria and was an integral member of the Super Eagles squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy on South African soil in 2013.
