Nnamdi Kanu: Step Down Immediately – IPOB Lawyer Tells Justice Nyako
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has called on Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja to immediately recuse herself from pro-Biafra activist trial.
Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that political activist Deji Adeyanju alongside other individuals had expressed worry over the handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s case by Justice Nyako.
Justice Nyako has continuously rejected the request of Kanu’s legal team to move the IPOB leader from the detention of the Department of State Service, DSS, to a correctional facility.
The judge had also shifted the Biafra leader’s trial to January 19/20, 2021, which means Nnamdi Kanu would spend the festive period locked up in detention.
Speaking on Monday, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer Ejiofor stated that it has become obvious Justice Nyako is biased.
He said Kanu’s lawyer will be activating processes to urge Nyako to recuse herself from the case so that the Chief Judge would give a directive to that effect.
Ejiofor also stated that the IPOB leader’s legal team did not stage a walkout from the court during Kanu’s trial on November 10 following the refusal of operatives of the DSS to allow some of them to gain access into the courtroom.
He said: “My client and by extension, the legal team has no implicit confidence in the court to proceed in this case. So, going forward, we are activating processes to urge my Lord to recuse herself from this case so that the Chief Judge would give a directive to that effect. It is open now even before a layman on the street, it’s clear that she is partial.
“So, now let me say this to you; this is a case in which we are representing a race, not Nnamdi Kanu. This is a case involving Igbo’s not Nnamdi Kanu alone we’re representing a race in this case. As sensible as serious as this case may be, it shouldn’t have been treated with this sense of levity.”
