Lekki Toll Gate Shooting: Lagos Judicial Panel Indicts Nigerian Police
The Lagos #EndSARS panel has indicted the Nigeria Police Force in the shooting of protesters at Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020.
Ezenwoko’s Blog reports that the Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel disclosed this in its report submitted to the Lagos State Government on Monday.
In the report titled, ‘Report Of Lekki Incident Investigation of 20th October 2020’, the panel claimed that the police officers who were at the tollgate physically assault unarmed protesters.
The panel’s report added that the assault of Nigerian youths at the Lekki toll gate led to injuries and deaths.
The panel also accused the police of attempted cover-up of the shooting of protesters at Lekki tollgate by picking up bullets at the scene of the incident.
“The panel found that the Nigerian Police Force deployed its officers to the Lekki tollgate on the night of the 20th October, 2020 and between that night and the morning of the 21st of October, 2020, its officer shot at, assaulted and battered unarmed protesters, which led to injuries and deaths.
“The police officers also tried to cover up their actions by picking up bullets,” the report reads.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Judicial Panel has allegedly found the Nigerian Army guilty of shooting protesters at the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020.
According to the report which is yet to be made public, the panel said soldiers of the Nigerian Army fired live bullets at the protesters in Lekki which was admitted by General A.I.Taiwo.
The general admitted on page 22 that the army went to the venue of the killings with live and blank bullets.
The report also stated that the absence of the officers of the Nigerian Army, who were summoned by the panel was an effort to hide material evidence relevant to the investigation.
