Summary of Position
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) is a world-wide network of professionals in international business development (IBD) working to advance Canadian commercial and economic interests abroad. Working under the general direction of the Senior Trade Commissioner at the Deputy High Commission in Lagos, the position contributes to the delivery of the mission's IBD program by delivering services to Canadian companies doing business in Nigeria.
Trade Commissioner services are in delivered in accordance with TCS policies and guidelines, and broader Government of Canada priorities for international trade, investment, and innovation. This IBD Trade Officer position leads the Mission's Extractives sectors portfolio (oil & gas and mining sectors) as well as other reactive trade sectors, and will:
- Promote trade, investment, and innovation collaboration between Canada and the countries of responsibility (Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe and Equatorial Guinee);
- Develop and maintain a network of key local business and government contacts;
- Plan, organize and deliver promotional events and activities in support of Canadian clients; and,
- Participate at trade shows and advocate for Canadian commercial interests.
- Disseminate market intelligence and business leads to Canadian clients in selected priority sectors;
- Conduct research and analysis, and formulate strategic advice for senior management and clients to enhance Canadian competitiveness in local markets;

Essential Qualifications
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and curriculum vitae (CV) how they meet each of the essential qualifications.
Education:
- Degree from a recognized university in a field related to the position, including but not limited to: Commerce, International Business, Finance, and Economics.
Language:
- Fluency in English (written and oral)
Experience:
- A minimum of five years of recent* and direct experience in:
- Business development, and/or foreign direct investment attraction, including directly managing client relationships and providing service support to customers/clients;
- Developing and managing networks with clients, partners and/or stakeholders;
- Researching and analyzing economic and commercial data and trends; and,
- Providing strategic advice, briefings and reports to management and/or clients on business issues.
- Recent experience is defined as a minimum of five (5) years within the last 8 years.

Asset Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following asset qualifications. If candidates meet the factors listed in the asset qualifications, they must also clearly demonstrate how they meet these factors in their covering letter and CV:
- Knowledge of the oil & gas and mining industries, including key companies, trends, supply chains, policies and regulations and the business environment;
- The ability to communicate effectively in French, both orally and in writing;
- Graduate degree from a recognized university (Master's degree or Ph.D.) in a field related to the position, including but not limited to: commerce, international business, finance, economics, geology or chemical engineering;
- Experience working in an international context;
- FITT Certified International Trade Professional (CITP ®) / (FITT International Business Professional (FIBP); and
- Knowledge of Canada and the Canadian politico-economic environment, as well as Canadian business practices.

Organizational Needs – Operational Requirements:
- Must be willing and able to travel within Nigeria and to Canada;
- Must be able to work planned overtime and occasionally on short notice;
- Annual leave may be restricted during busy periods due to operational requirements.
- Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends).
- Hours of work: Monday to Friday (37.5 hours per week).

Condition(s) of Employment
