Funding 422  COP28 delegates too small for Nigeria, says senator

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim representing Ondo South District in the National Assembly has said the 422 persons funded by the Nigerian government to the  COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates is too small.

After backlash from Nigerians over the large number of delegates to the summit, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday disclosed that only 422 out of Nigeria’s 1,411  were funded by the Federal Government.

Reacting to the clarification on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ibrahim stated the number of delegates had an influence on knowledge sharing at the event, adding that Nigeria was suffering from the impact of environmental pollution.

He added that the history of the country’s contingent to the summit could influence her hosting of the event in the near future.

“Funding (over) 400 people to a conference like this is too small. You may want to host the conference sometime in future,” he stated

Ibrahim said President Bola Tinubu signed many multimillion-dollar bilateral deals at the summit in Nigeria’s interest.

The lawmaker said the international community wouldn’t take Tinubu as seriously if he was in Dubai with a lean delegation.
